Asylum statistics March 2026

The CGRS has published the asylum figures for March 2026.

Applications for international protection

  • In March, the Immigration Office registered 1,972 applicants for international protection. Each person (including children) is counted separately.  
  • In March 2026, Palestine, Afghanistan and Turkey lead the top the top 10 countries of origin of applicants for international protection. Congo (DRC), Eritrea, Guinea, Burundi, Cameroon, Georgia and Iraq complete the top 10.    

Decisions

  • In March 2026, the CGRS took 2,493 decisions, concerning a total of 3,139 persons.
  • In March 2026, the protection rate amounted to 25,5%.

Workload

  • The total workload of the CGRS corresponds to the number of cases in which the CGRS has not yet taken a decision. At the end of March 2026, the total workload amounted to 24,369 cases (30,973 persons). In view of the current inflow and the expansion of the workforce (more applications are being processed) 6,500 dossiers can be considered as a normal caseload. The actual backlog amounts to 17,869 cases.

From 12 June 2026, the CGRS will apply new EU rules for the asylum procedure, including mandatory recording of the personal interview, wider use of the accelerated procedure and revised rules on safe countries.
